Spandau Ballet gold & fine bubbles. Giving it a sniff and it starts with a baguette, that opens the curtains to apples & pears, and leads to a blend of lime, lemon, mandarin oranges, pomelo, etc citrus, and finally over ripe backyard garden grown cucumbers. Sip and there’s that springy citrus blend with a little sizzle, green/crab apples, young hard green pears, sliver of a pineapple bite, fresh cut grass & Kirbys, and a good shake of salt. This is one happy bottle.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: goes great with the crunch & brings out more salt

I will admit it has been a bit since I’ve picked up an Australian wine, but I did a double take when I saw this Vermentino pét-nat…ok, “Sea Foam” you’re coming home with me. Turns out the Carters aren’t just focusing on Italian grapes, but which grape will thrive the best on their lands (or better to say the land tells you what they want). “We’re agnostic to variety – we want to find the best for our sites and climates. French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, German – whatever – we’re Australia, and we’re all about Australian Wine.” They also want to spread their love of wine with the world and encourage others that haven’t been bitten by the vino bug to give it a try. Check out their & Henry Doyle’s YouTube channel @bottle_shock (old name was “Wine For The People”). It’s a fun, non pretentious learning experience, and is also the name of their new wine bar that is to soft open Easter weekend. Now they’re not only growing their wine community online but also up close and personal. 🥂

🎶You Can’t Spell “Awesome” Without “Me”🎶

M
Le Bazar 2021
Sparkling Orange
Trebbiano, Clairette, Vermentino
VDF
Natural wine, no sulfites
Provence, France
Jean Luc Lametrie (also founder of Wine Mc2)

Deep golden orange with and pink bubbles. Sniffing and there’s oranges, kumquats, a little Cherry Twizzlers, a childhood memory of Circus Peanuts, then very light raspberries along with lemon/lime spritz, smidge of toasted coriander & fresh baked baguettes. Going in for the taste and here comes a blend of orange, lemon-lime, kumquats, light pomelo, young raspberries with seltzer & salt, tarty yellow cherries, bit of quince & pear combo pie, smidge of smoke, and as it opens a little toast but mostly sharpens everything.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER IT

MOOA is pronounced “Moi” which as we all know means “Me”, so I guess Jean Luc decided to embark on this project purely for himself and we’re just lucky to get to share a taste of it. The first time I picked one of your wines “Ground Control To Major Tom”, it was the label that lured me in, but when I popped that cap, what was living in the bottle was even better. With this orange I was already betting I’d totally be in for a fun & sparky bubbly and you did not disappoint. My question is why the name “Le Bazar”? This is definitely not “a mess” but a bottle of pure awesome natural joy.

Good Deeds Of Warmth

Forlorn Hope
Baron Von Verm 2019
Vermentino
Rorick Heritage Vineyard
Calaveras County, CA, USA
Organic, hand-harvested, native yeasts
Winemaker: Matthew Rorick

Lovely bright gold. Pour and let it sit a bit and then there’s scents of lemon/peach meringue pie, mild bit of pineapple & mango, summer rained on granite, honeycomb, and smoke. I already know I’m going to really enjoy this…and yep, I sure do! Sipping a tango of lemon/key lime & zest with mango, young peach/apricot, and as it continues to warm pie spice, a bite of parsley, salt, smoke, and that taste of fresh honeycomb (I remember as a kid) from my Poppa’s hives and now I realize where that smoke light taste comes from when I tasted the comb. It’s from when he had to smoke the bees out to get to the honey.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: oh NO NO NO!

Some of you may know I’m a big fan of @forlornhopewines and also Matthew Rorick (he’s such a rockstar!). He’s been proving it even more with his good works with @insulate_ukraine. As they say on their IG page they are, “Designing emergency home-built solutions to replace windows blown out by the war in Ukraine. @harry_hopalot & @thebighoof on the ground in #kharkiv .” You can donate to https://www.insulate-ukraine.org/ and help keep families warm. Also if you want another delicious way to help, @vinewinenyc is donating $5 for every bottle sold of Forlorn Hope’s: “Baron Von Verm 2019”, “Queen of the Sierra Rosé”, and “Onavolk Merlot 2015” through the month of February. I always love seeing people do good in the world because it gives me hope and touches my heart.

Continuing To Write History

Cantine Bregante
Vermentino 2021
Golfo del Tigulio-Portofino DOC
Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy
Owners/winegrowers: Sergio & Simona Sanguineti

Springy gold with a touch of green. Lovely scents of pears, apricots, a touch of white peach, apple, lilacs & wisteria, and at lat a gentle sea breeze salt. Rolling it around in my mouth and it’s crisp, fresh, light & dry yet luscious the same time. Delightful blend of peaches, pears, apricots, apples, honeysuckle, touch of salt, and an herby ending like basil. An easy drinker.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: delightful

Cantine Bregante’s history dates back to 1870s. They were not only making wine, but also transporting their barrels via a group of their own ships departing from Sestri Levante. During unloading the barrels were tossed into the sea, rolled up the beach and into the old cellar. “Not only the crew but also those on the ground helped in this operation and every time a landing occurred, it was almost like attending a party.” Sounds like hard work but somewhat festive too. Now their cellar has moved further away from the beach since so much has changed in moving wine and bottling it for that matter, and Sergio & Simona Sanguineti (the latest generation) are keeping their heritage growing, “Now it’s up to us to continue writing our history based on tradition and passion to continue producing wines that are able to express the typicality of our territory, the warmth of our sun and the lively sea.” I just want to hug them for sharing from afar their beautiful and heartwarming town Sestri Levante. Due to their Vermentino, I went on a mini virtual vacation enjoying learning of the colorful architecture, their magical “Baia delle Favole” & “Baia del Silenzio”, and wish I could take a stroll on one of their beaches and just listen to the sea.❤️

What’s In A Nickname?

Cantina Canu
Deispanta
Vermentino di Gallura DOCG Superiore
Hand harvested
Luogosanto, Sassari, Sardegna, Italy
Family winery; Co-founder: Carla Cualbu

Starlight with green shimmers. Scents of pears, salt floats in, and then there are lilacs, squeeze of lemon & lime, a bundle of rosemary & thyme, and a granitey gravelly touch. Take a sip and it’s delightfully lemony & limey along with a citrus zest, kumquat-lite, slice of pear, and a little more of that granite which turns to sea breeze. Just an ever so welcome easy drinker that’s beckoning me to relax with another glass while basking in the sun.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: eh makes it a little tart

What’s in a name or a nickname for that matter. As a child, somehow I ended up with “Chipmunk Cheeks”. Later as an adult, a friend decided to label me “Shifty” which still makes me 🤔. Anyway, Cantina Canu is a family winery that respects traditions and the generations that came before them and show it in the wine names like Deispanta. Carla’s great-great- grandfather’s nickname was Ispànta (wonderment) since he was quite the amazing fighter of a style I have never heard of before. “S’istrumpa” which means “thrown on the ground” is a traditional style of Sardinian wrestling, that’s a blend of strength and balance. The fighters face each other and start what looks like a bear hug with one arm over a shoulder and the other under an armpit, the tussle until one ends up on the ground with the other on top. Well, now I know when in Sardinia, an embrace might not always be what you expect. 🤼‍♂️

More Than a Certification, It’s a Way of Life

Tenute Dettori
Renosu
Triple “A” Agricoltori Artigiani Artisti
Vermentino, Moscato di Sennori
Organic, biodynamic hand harvested, and spontaneous fermentation
Sennori (SS), Romangia, Sardinia, Italy
Winemaker: Alessandro Dettori

As Spandau Ballet would say, “Gold!” Greeting my nose are flowers, spice and everything nice…ok here’s breaking it down…butterfly lilacs, pear, orange/tangerine zest, smidge of nutmeg, slate and salt. Sip away and there’s pear with sweet apple mellow, peaches, light honey, mango, lychee, nectarine, lemon, orange zest, salty dryness, and a touch of light funk in the back. Keep letting it shake the chill off and then you get a glassful of the nectar of the gods – ambrosia (not that 70s crap from family Christmas gatherings).

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: just don’t do it

While absorbing all the info about Dettori (from their own words), I came across, “They are not wines that are slaves to business logic and marketing strategies.” Alessandro’s wines are full of freedom, life, and in this Renosu’s case…“Triple ‘A’”, in which the winemaker needs these three points: be a pure farmer, utilize artisanal methods, and be artistic. You have to be hands off, as natural as the day you or the grape was born, absolutely no chemicals in the vineyard and the cellar, only indigenous yeasts, and the list goes on. Essentially be true to the land, the vines, the grapes/wine, and to yourself…and respect all of it. It’s more than a certification, it’s a way of life, inside and outside the bottle.

Abracadabra!

Quartomoro
Z
Frizzante sui Lieviti
100% Vermentino
Arborea, Sardegna, Italy
Low intervention, guyot training, unfined and unfiltered
Winemaking couple: Piero Cella and Luciana Baso

Hazy golden bubbly with pretty sediment just waiting for you at the base. Pop that cap and come on lemon! You know those light layered wafer cookies that has lemon cream between each layer. Also some tangerine and dainty white flowers. Lift and swig and more lemon on my tongue with a tad of grapefruit, apple, pinch of salt, and a savory mix of spices: sage, thyme rosemary, and a toasty cinnamon thing. It’s crispy and bouncy, and I’m just realizing there’s reminders of Orangina. Fabulous sparkler and IPA lovers would have fun with it too. Best of both worlds

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: no complaints here

Quartomoro has been creating this beauty since 2012. Almost feels like an ancient science experiment, but then so do most wines when you really think about it. From what I read, they take last year’s non bubbly Vermentino (on the lees) and re-ferment the dry base in the bottle and then add the next year’s freshly crushed juice, skin, seed mixture (the must) and the ancestral method works it’s magic. Abracadabra! You have this unfined, unfiltered and non vintage bottle. I’m guessing, I’m drinking a mix of 2018 and 2019, due to the harvests being in September, but feel free to let me know if I’m wrong. It’s nice to think I’m sipping something from before all this 2020 mess. Here’s again to 2021! Raise that glass of frizzante and welcome this New Year in with a big smooch!
