Like the Song of the Summer

Succès Vinicola
Patxanga Rosado 2019
D.O. Conca de Barberà
Catalonia Spain
Trepat 100%
Organic
Winemakers: Mariona Vendrell and Albert Canela

This is a deep and I mean a really deep rosado. Swirling and going in for the first sniff. Juicy cherry and watermelon hit you first. Next there’s salt, plums, strawberries, and something that may be basil. Trust me I’ve had a whole lot of basil lately due to summer. Now for the sip…there’s a tingle on the tongue. Dark cherry and watermelon explosion! Also some citrus tang, salt, and a dash of white pepper.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: the tingle is still there but they intensify this watermelon cherry love gusher

This wine is like a song of the summer, you want to keep it on repeat. Since I’m reading all over that it’s hard to pinpoint the song of this summer, I’m picking a really old fab groove to pair with this lovely glass.

Naked as the Day You’re Born

Terra di Briganti
Nato Nudo
Fiano 2018
Benevento IGP
Casalduni Campania Italy
Fiano 100%
Organic, biodynamic, vegan, and indigenous yeasts

Super deep glistening gold. Inhale and then there’s blossoms, tangerine, some wafting salt, and then here comes the apples, pears, and something a bit herbal. Go in for the sip and there’s those pears and apples again. Add to that melon, honeysuckle, citrus peel tang, and spice that may be black pepper, or something dried. All I know is I want a plate of salame and mortadella.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: gives it a citrus zing lightness with a touch of celery

Nato Nudo means born naked, and is a natural unfiltered wine with no added sulfites. You can really smell, taste, and feel the benefit of the wild rugged land where the guyot trained Fiano grows.

Let’s Hear it for the Bugs!

Christina
Zweigelt Rosé 2019
Göttlesbrunn Carnuntum Austria
Zweigelt 100%
Winemaker Christina Netzl
Organic

A glass of really deep flaming cloudy rosé. Sniff and there’s cherry, watermelon, sea breeze, citrus peel, and mineral. Just a beautiful refreshing fragrance. Tip your glass and take a sip. Whoa it’s super fruity. Again there’s delicious watermelon, tart cherry, some lemon tang, and I do believe pepper. Oh this is so easy to drink, but take your time, unless you have a backup bottle in the fridge.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Sweetens the cherry watermelon

The Netzl family has six generations of wine history, and Christina has taken it to the natural side. She grew up on her parents farm/vineyard (in Carnuntum, Austria) learning the ways of the vine. As her family began further focusing on the wine, she also continued her education in London. Upon her return home, she navigated the winery to it’s now organic status, which is heralded on the labels of her Christina line. I’m a big bee and bug backer, and these cheerful illustrations of the beneficial inhabitants of the vineyard tell it all. There’s no pesticides here. Also interestingly enough, Fritz Zweigelt, who had doctorate in entomology, is the father of the grape Zweigelt. Back in the 1920s he crossed Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grapes to come up with this hybrid.

On to Carnuntum…what a history, an ancient Roman fortress and a destination on the Amber Road. Now from what I’m reading, it’s a treasure trove for archeologists, and as seen in Christina’s wine, an amazing place to have a vineyard from the rich soil influenced by the Danube. Visiting the city’s website, introduced me to Heidentor or also known as “Heathen’s Gate” which is quite weathered yet still majestic. Their site also has a digital rendering of how it probably looked when it was first constructed back in 351–361 AD. There’s also remains of amphitheaters and a gladiator school which they also recreate here. Alright, while watching the video and listening to the dramatic music, it made me have a GOT moment. Started waiting to see if a dragon would fly in and crisp everyone.

Turning away from the city and now heading to Donau-auen National Park, which is a floodplain area along the Danube. I thought, I was just going to be enjoying discovering the wildlife and land, but as I research, I’ve discovered a political movement that saved and created this area. As industry developed and hydroelectric plants and dams popped up along the Danube, Austrian environmentalists stood up and made their voices herd. They protested and encamped themselves to stop the destruction of nature. The police could not even move them. Thousands occupied the Hainburg area to stop the deforestation which became known as the Hainburg Movement. This led to their Supreme Court stopping the clearing of the land and eventually the power plant losing their fight. Thank goodness! Think of how different this area would be, if people just sat back and let their precious water, wildlife and forests be destroyed. Here’s a gorgeous video provided by the park. Wow, to wake up and see such lush beauty each morning would be amazing. This is definitely a place that was and is worth fighting for.

Roaring into the Weekend

Lion Brewery (Ceylon)
Lion Stout
Tropical Stout

Acquired at Sugarburg

After cracking open the can, it’s a dark chocolate pour. As it tingles my nose, there’s chocolate, caramel, nutmeg, and a hint of Cel-Ray (wow that’s something I haven’t thought of in a while). Hmmm. Sipping…again there’s chocolate, caramel, and also toasty coffee. It’s a refreshing bitter stout and great for this blazing hot weekend.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Mellows the bitter, and makes the chocolate more of a baker’s chocolate cookie.

Naturally Enchanting

Agricola Foradori

Teroldego 100%

A goblet of total goth deep dark ruby purple. Take a breath of cherries, plums, vanilla, cola, flowers, and some mineral earthiness. First sip and there’s tart cherries that mellow out to smooth. Next there’s plums, raisin, singed orange peel,  I do believe some strawberries, and dark rich earthy goodness. It’s as enchanting as Elizabeth Fraser’s voice.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Everything smoothes out even more. Silky fruity goodness

This deep dark beauty had me thumbing through some of the music from my past, and here are two of my Fraser favorites.  Even now Song To The Siren gives me goosebumps and makes my heart fly, and let us not forget her lush work with Massive Attack – Teardrop.

We’ve Struck Gold!

Bodegas Barbadillo
Solear en Rama
Manzanilla
Saca de Verano 2018
Palomino 100%
D.O. Manzanilla, Andalucia, Sanlucar de Barrameda, Spain

Yes, we’ve struck pure gold in a glass. Breathe in and I’m finding toasted almond, pecan, caramel candy. I smell pralines!  Rich apples are next and a touch of smoky salt. Swish and sip the pecans, caramels, and as stated before…pralines, but with a small burn! Mmmm. Again rich apples and some fresh cut grass.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Does not pair well with Cheez-It’s. Let me repeat myself…IN NO CASE SHOULD YOU PAIR THIS WITH CHEEZ-IT’S!

Not going to lie, I love the label. I’ve found out that Bodegas Barbadillo, for each season, they bottle a small amount of their eight year unfiltered (En Rama) Manzanilla, they also depict one of the wildlife that can be found in the Coto de Doñana. The summer 2018 watercolor (by the artist, Mari Angeles Aris) is the Black-eared Wheatear. This lovely small bird hangs out in the national park from April to August when it continues the trek to Africa.

Fresh and Foxy

Terra di Briganti
Coda di Volpe 2019
100% Coda di Volpe
Benevento Campania Italy
Organic, biodynamic and vegan

Cloudy orange goldness and tiny bubbles cling to the glass. Go in for the sniff and wow, honeysuckle and spring grass, then a hint of vanilla cookie, smoke, and a splash of cola.  This is delightful. Swirl and sip. There’s honey, a light citrus tingle, smoke and light citrusy and tangerine tingle with a dash of smoke and salt. This is one sleek, sly, fun fox.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: tangerine mellowness continues

The more you know: Coda di volpe means tail of the fox, which refers to how this type of grape looks on the vine growing in a long tail-like bunch.

Sparkling very deep orange gold…like antique rose gold. Beautiful bubbles. First sniff and here’s lemon, flowers, tart apple, tangerine, maybe some cinnamon, and good earth funk. Now raise your glass and take a sip. Whoa and wow! Apples (reminds me of golden delicious which is my apple point of reference from childhood but also another richer sweeter apple too), a little celery, and smoke. Opens up to sweet smoothness with a little kick of balsamic.

Pairs w Cheez-It’s: super sweet apple-ness. Glorious. Reminds me of my childhood home, the apple orchard and helping out making cider by hand.

Let’s enjoy another glass along with some Apple Kisses from Alison Moyet.

Glassful of garnet. Give it a little moment to breathe. Inhale and here comes the cherries, cola, some spice that I’m thinking is cloves, and orange peel. Going in for the sip and there’s tart cherry that turns smooth, raisin, orange, some smoke, a dash of white pepper and rustic earthiness. This is old school.

Pairs w Cheez-It’s: brings out the cherry orange sweetness

Four Generations of Hard Work and Passion

Abadía da Cova
A Fuga Viticultura de Montana 2018
Ribeira Sacra (DO)
O Saviñao Lugo Spain
Albariño 61%, Godello 21%, and Treixadura 18%
Winemaker Nacho Álvarez

Super light straw color. Take a whiff and flowers like spring fruit blossoms appear, then melon, citrus, some smoke, and slate that’s just been rained on. First sip and this has much more depth than I expected. Next there’s melon, smoke, a little citrus, and lovely honeysuckle.

Pairs w Cheez-It’s: brings out a citrus zest zing

Adegas Moure and Abadía da Cova’s history starts back with a single man, Baldomero Moure Pérez. Born in 1892, he wanted more and left A Cova, Spain for Cuba. There he found employment with the railway and a way to save for his future. After his return to Galicia, he settled down with Carmen López Moure, and this led to pave a way toward wine. With her inheritance of land in A Cova and his savings, they continued to buy surrounding farmland, and then lay the foundations for their vineyards, the wines, and their spirits. Through the generations, the winery grew and refined their trade. Now it is the fourth generation (Paloma, José y Adrián) who continue the traditions and passions of the vines and grow forward. Also in 2018, they brought in the acclaimed winemaker Nacho Álvarez.

Before I start traveling, I have to comment on the beautiful and surreal label by the artist Annita Rivera (also know as Plástica). The haunting grape leaves stare back with their singular eyes, and a mini monkey hangs out with the grapes. The flower may be a camellia, but I’m no botanist. I’m also not much of a birder, and had to reach out a friend to see what the two central ones are. I’m told the white one is a Sandhill Crane and one darker one seems to be a Tricolored Heron that the artist took some liberties with. If anyone else has any input on our feathered friends…please let me know.

Let’s head to Lugo. Starting off with the Muralla Romana de Lugo which is a Unesco World Heritage site. These Roman walls are the only ones in the world that are left intact. From what I’m finding, the walls were constructed between 263 and 276 A.D. There is a tale that they were built to protect the “Sacred Forest of Augustus”. Either way, if it was to protect trees or a city from Germanic invaders, they are a beautiful piece of Spain’s history. Inside the walls you will find the Lugo Cathedral. It’s a mix of architectural styles, such as Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, and Romanesque. The images of the interior are truly glorious. The Chorus is filled with the incredibly detailed walnut woodwork by Francisco de Moure (17th century). Words do not do it justice, so please do click the link to view. Same goes for the main chapel which is an artwork overload to the senses, and contains paintings by José Terán and Corniellis de Holanda’s altarpiece. One more place I want to stop by is Parque de Rosalía de Castro which is named after the famous poet. Evidently her favorite flower was the camellia which is also the Galician official flower. Camellias were introduced to Galicia in the 1700s by Portuguese sailors, and they are now abundant through the region. Such a beautiful flower that also had another use for the sailors. As they learned from trade in China, the leaves can be dried to make a tea rich in vitamin C, which is perfect for sailors that are trying to ward off scurvy.

Lugo, you are a beautiful and history rich find. I’m so thrilled to have been introduced to you!
