Electric magenta with a splash of orange sunset. Btw chill this baby. Ok there’s a Hawaiian punch memory from long ago. BTW I really loved that stuff as a kid and ran up quite a bill at Sea World eons ago. I don’t think my parents realized there were no free refills. Sniffing cherry, plum, raspberry, guava, juicy fun. Now onto the taste and there’s flying free deliciousness…cherries, plums, a bowl of berries with some guava again, splash of kiwi & a little light lemon/lime spritz that oddly has a little Boo Berry waving in the distance, and a bit of springhouse mineral to even it out. This is flat out scrumptious, glou glou, and a bring more than 2 bottles worthy.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: brings out the tart

Well, it’s spelled out right on the label, “Science As Art”. Kristie Tacey wasn’t born into the vine life, but ended up there after becoming a published scientist. My S.O. is one too but he went into visual arts which enhance his research & imaging abilities, so I can totally see where this would work so well with Tacey’s vision for her wines. She can look at the full life cycle from the land to the the harvest and which grapes to select…through to the bottle and view it from different angles from logic, sustainability, creative blending, and intuition. The other cool thing about her is she pairs her wines with music (as you can see with this bottle of Bowie’s “Soul Love”) and she has fab taste! Check out her playlist here.

Stained glass ruby. Give this glass some space to breathe (and later a steak or blood sausage). Scents grow of cherries fresh & dried, plums, dark raisins, cranberry, a little cola, oil cured olive pits, and a light earthy that turns into a toasty goodness. Tasting and all of the scents are heightened and more dry, blend of cranblueraspberry with a tiny fig dropped in, orange & peel, balsamic reduction, and a spice slow burn on the back.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: smooth

Had no idea how much centuries of history was going to be in this bottle when I grabbed it from the under $20 shelf. There’s a lineage of royalty, patrons of the arts, 5 generations of women at the helm, the vast varying territory including the vineyards, a bird sanctuary, cork trees, and the list goes on. Of course, the one thing that truly stands out to me (other than the fab wine) are their noble & majestic  Lusitano horses, that have been linked to the estate since the 1600s. What an amazing ability to get to raise and grow with these historic (lineage of this breed can be traced to the early neolithic) spirits. Horses also can be such a source of comfort, and in my case during my youth when things were not bright they pulled me out into the sun. There’s nothing like that contact & connect where your ride as one. 🐎 🍷

Shimmering gold with tiny bubbles. Right out of the gate and headed for my nose are pears & golden apples, yeasty moments of fresh out of the oven goodness, hyacinth, a touch of mango, pineapple & honeydew, and a salty breeze on the back with a pinch of white pepper. Sipping and all of the scents are there in the taste and a bit more honeydew with a pinch of some spice that I’m trying to place. I know it’s pepper related but a warmth that grows like ginger sprinkle…that’s it! Also a short scrape of lime zest and it’s all so crisp and lovely.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: beautiful bursts of fruit

Oh Tenuta Belvedere, you continue to make life brighter. Have lost count on how many of your wines I’ve tried and you never fail to deliver a beautiful bottle. There’s something I never thought to question before is why, WAI? Turns out it’s a simple answer. Gianluca’s MIL liked the Thai traditional greeting. How fitting for such a friendly and welcoming sparkler. Did you know there are 3 levels of Wai? Honestly, I didn’t until this glass led me to these lessons in politeness. Purple ruby stained glass. Scents of red currants, a bit of wild flair that flees, cherries, strawberries, plums, and an alpine herbal pinch. Sipping and it’s a light & fresh strawbluecranpomrasberry cocktail that has a lip tingling brightness and goes delightfully dry. Let it keep opening and a bit of tomato leaf roams out and the Juan Garcia begins to groove & grind even better with the Tempranillo.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: snacking good

After trying “Bébeme”, I knew I had to grab the other Bodega Frontio I could find (there’s others so I’m still on the lookout for more). Kept glancing at the label art, and started to see more than a bottle and a mountain range…remembering a trip to see the Grand Tetons and we all know where that name came from (those naughty French-Canadian trappers 🦫). Wondering if it’s just my naive or dirty rambling mind. So I was bit curious about this name and just like the previous bottle of “Drink Me” it has a little twist. “Follaco”, I’m betting has to relate to the Spanish verb “follar” which translates to a word that flies off my tongue way too quickly and sometimes gets me in trouble. No matter if I’m the one that is assuming too much and is lost in translation, I say give this bottle a try bc it’s good with things sexy or even spicy (like a good curry)…yes, this time I’m talking about food…do you really think my mind is always only on one thing…well other than wine?

Orange deep gold pour with a bit of haze. Scents start popping out of oranges & greenery, tangerines, apricots, whole bunch of orchard blossoms, and a few sprigs of grass. All of the above scents play well in the taste along with even more tangerine & orange blossoms, pineapple, light yet heady flowers, and a little salty smoke. So fresh, friendly and a little bit frisky.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: smooth operator

“The secret of Can Suriol is to understand that the true creator of our wines is nature.” – Assisi Suriol…such true and beautiful words. Brisat Orange is from their Azimuth line, that includes not only their organic/biodynamic grapes but also some from their neighbors, so it’s a collaboration of skin contact joy. The Suriols really do care about the imprint they make on their environment even while having natural fun…they give back by composting, using solar powered electricity, and sourcing their bottles as local as they can…and now their bit of bottled sunshine has caused a not so awfully old,  oldie to get stuck in my head, and glued a big smile on my face & in my heart.

Dark ruby/plummy glass. Breathing in a creaminess at first pour, next up are cherries & plums fresh & dried chewiness, a bag of mixed blueberries, raspberries, strawberries & a mini reduction of them all along with an herb bundle including rosemary, thyme and a few more. Sipping and it’s bright and light. There’s that bit of cream again that lightens over time, all of the above cherries, plums & berries bouncing around on my tongue along with boysenberry, a smidge of orange zest & a teeny lemon spark, and after having a time out there’s a little clove/pepper bit on the back. Just joyously light and lively.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: weirdly very delicious

I had already finished a playful post about this red being a perfect seasonal transition, and then I read the tiny print on the label…this bottle represents so much more. Will fully admit to not knowing much on the history of Greece’s civil war in the 40s, and I had never heard of the RMS Mataroa that gave an escape route (Dec. 1945) for around 150 intellectuals, artists, scientists, philosophers, writers, and other creatives from the unrest & persecution. They were gifted a chance of a new life in Paris and to also spread their knowledge, research & artistic passion through Europe that continues today. Check out Mataroa La Mémoire trouée “the precious cargo” for a snapshot into their past.

Deep velvet ruby. Breathing in violets & other sorts of powdery light flowers, raisins, cherries dried & fresh, plums, and a little balsamic reduction. The tastes are all of the above with cinnamon pinch & a small white pepper shake on the back, along with juicy blackberries, a bowl of fun assorted blueberry, raspberry, strawberries and other assorted, smidge of dark chocolate with a touch of cream and silkiness (post a little chill).

Pairs with Cheez-Its tonight I’m just not in the mood. I’ve had one of those weeks or months or years

My S.O. and I have a bit of a let’s agree to disagree moment about French Malbec. Ok, he swears he hates it, but hasn’t tasted this one. Personally every grape from everywhere is precious in their own way in my book, so why limit yourself, and this one is a whole different creature than the Argentinian he prefers. It can be fun, graceful, has a backbone, and has the strength & finesse like women’s rugby team players during a lineout lift. BTW did I mention I love rugby, and am proud that the popularity of women’s rugby is continually growing! Anyway, I was led to this bottle due to Aymard’s “Queue de Pressoir” (70% Ségalin, 30% Malbec) which is one lovely bottle of bouncing happiness. If you can find either Clos D’Audhuy, give them a try because not only are they delicious, they are also gentle on your wallet.

Glou glouing at first from the bottle and later a good glass pour. Dark rose with electric magenta, a little blood orange, and a little natural detritus at the bottom of the bottle. Taking my nose on a walk through a rose garden along with strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, light blend of citrus zest, and a faint whiff of smoke. Ooh there’s an effervescent tongue tingle leading to a cocktail of cranberry, young strawberry (including caps), raspberry, blackberry with a squish of lemon, and a chew of wild sour grass chewed in my early years stuck in the outfield.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: pretty good

This bottle is like revisiting a comforting friend while still recovering (which I’m still in the process after unexpectedly  getting my bell rung very) and oh does it make me grin albeit painfully since the cuts and bruises are still looking like I went a few rounds with a prize fighter. Hey you should see the other guy. 🤪 Anyway, just like all my Folias de Baco & Uivo encounters I always want to howl their praise and embrace their pack. Cheers to tonight’s (now last week’s) Harvest Moon and channeling my inner wolf!

Yellow with green hints and lots of fine active bubbles. First up are creamy yeasty fresh baked scents followed by a pears & mellow apple blend, touch of lychee as it opens, and over time a teeny very light citrus tingle in the way back…it’s beautifully light & dainty. Sipping and all the scents & creaminess are right there…gentle, free and as it grows more full with a little more of a lemon/lime crisp tingle in a good way, and a crumble of sugar cookie with a pinch of salt. Just a dreamy, enchanting glass of bubble love that has enough edge can pair with some good ol’ rock n roll.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: Not tonight

Ruggero & Andrea have designated themselves as “guardians” for their land, and what a beautiful rich, green, sloping vision it is. As in their own words, “We have the duty to transfer a little of the wonderful landscape in which we live into the glasses.” L’ Essenziale completely transports you to their history (how it’s made & etc) and celebrates their native grape. It also links you to a group (ColFondo Agricola) unified under 10 winemaking commandments, secondary fermentation in the bottle, and the sparklers being able to pass a blind tasting & seal of approval before they can carry the project’s logo on the back label. Oh and it doesn’t hurt if you like a little head banging to AC/DC, to join this sparky band of vintners. 🎸🤘Rock on!

Just like that good old yellow green crayon but shining. Breathing in white flowers & blossoms, mix of green apples, a  little green grass, firm crisp pears, a little bubbling citrus spark with a savory herb bundle with sage, thyme, & more, and of course my old familiar of that mineral spring house. Oooh this is delicious! Tasting green apples, pears, light honeysuckle, a sprig of fresh cut grass, a salt rim, and that same herb & mineral hit again. This is gentle, delicate and adventurous at the same time, and as it opens in the heat of tonight it blooms & shows its beauty.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: it’s ok but better on its own

Once upon a time there were five boys/friends that watched their elders revel & devote themselves to the growth & creation of an elixir, “Erbaluce Passito”, and well…it stuck. They did grow up, find their place in the world, but their minds circled back to that happy reminder from their childhood, or as they say “with our project we try to replicate those ancient gestures to give new life to that wonder of taste and inner search that springs out of a Settimo Rottaro Erbaluce Passito glass …”  Oh, to have a chance to recapture the past, harness a dream and make it real. Just like their native jewel of a grape…it’s a kind of magic!
