A glass of spun straw. I’m breathing in flowers, citrus and it tingles my nose. Taking a sip and there’s limes, citrus and something sweet peachy keen and a lick of granite. It’s fresh and friendly. A perfect wine to sit out back and enjoy a summer evening.

Four Generations of Hard Work and Passion

Abadía da Cova
A Fuga Viticultura de Montana 2018
Ribeira Sacra (DO)
O Saviñao Lugo Spain
Albariño 61%, Godello 21%, and Treixadura 18%
Winemaker Nacho Álvarez

Super light straw color. Take a whiff and flowers like spring fruit blossoms appear, then melon, citrus, some smoke, and slate that’s just been rained on. First sip and this has much more depth than I expected. Next there’s melon, smoke, a little citrus, and lovely honeysuckle.

Pairs w Cheez-It’s: brings out a citrus zest zing

Adegas Moure and Abadía da Cova’s history starts back with a single man, Baldomero Moure Pérez. Born in 1892, he wanted more and left A Cova, Spain for Cuba. There he found employment with the railway and a way to save for his future. After his return to Galicia, he settled down with Carmen López Moure, and this led to pave a way toward wine. With her inheritance of land in A Cova and his savings, they continued to buy surrounding farmland, and then lay the foundations for their vineyards, the wines, and their spirits. Through the generations, the winery grew and refined their trade. Now it is the fourth generation (Paloma, José y Adrián) who continue the traditions and passions of the vines and grow forward. Also in 2018, they brought in the acclaimed winemaker Nacho Álvarez.

Before I start traveling, I have to comment on the beautiful and surreal label by the artist Annita Rivera (also know as Plástica). The haunting grape leaves stare back with their singular eyes, and a mini monkey hangs out with the grapes. The flower may be a camellia, but I’m no botanist. I’m also not much of a birder, and had to reach out a friend to see what the two central ones are. I’m told the white one is a Sandhill Crane and one darker one seems to be a Tricolored Heron that the artist took some liberties with. If anyone else has any input on our feathered friends…please let me know.

Let’s head to Lugo. Starting off with the Muralla Romana de Lugo which is a Unesco World Heritage site. These Roman walls are the only ones in the world that are left intact. From what I’m finding, the walls were constructed between 263 and 276 A.D. There is a tale that they were built to protect the “Sacred Forest of Augustus”. Either way, if it was to protect trees or a city from Germanic invaders, they are a beautiful piece of Spain’s history. Inside the walls you will find the Lugo Cathedral. It’s a mix of architectural styles, such as Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, and Romanesque. The images of the interior are truly glorious. The Chorus is filled with the incredibly detailed walnut woodwork by Francisco de Moure (17th century). Words do not do it justice, so please do click the link to view. Same goes for the main chapel which is an artwork overload to the senses, and contains paintings by José Terán and Corniellis de Holanda’s altarpiece. One more place I want to stop by is Parque de Rosalía de Castro which is named after the famous poet. Evidently her favorite flower was the camellia which is also the Galician official flower. Camellias were introduced to Galicia in the 1700s by Portuguese sailors, and they are now abundant through the region. Such a beautiful flower that also had another use for the sailors. As they learned from trade in China, the leaves can be dried to make a tea rich in vitamin C, which is perfect for sailors that are trying to ward off scurvy.

Lugo, you are a beautiful and history rich find. I’m so thrilled to have been introduced to you!

Xarel.lo 100%

Ancestral Method
Organic, biodynamic, native yeasts, vegan friendly, and from what I read…aged in a Spanish Civil War air raid shelter
Winemaker Ignasi Segui

A glass of pale lemony gold. Let it breathe a short bit and then inhale. There’s salt, a touch of smoke, then lemon, apples, pears, and slate. First sip is vibrant with lots of tiny bubbles, at first some hay, lemon, and apple. It’s crisp with a smidge of spice which may be cinnamon. As time passes it melts into grassy light sweetness.

When I poured it is was like a creamy pomegranate foam on top. It’s a raspberry bubble cloud, and reminded me of a framboise lambic pour. Inhale the wave of raspberries, strawberries, lemon, some cherry, a whiff of hay and a touch of something herbal like maybe thyme. Take a sip and there’s massive berries, a little of that same hay, and some tart cherry. It’s bright and dry and juicy at the same time. It’s a glass of celebration!

Pairs with Cheez-Its: the strawberries explode

Dominio de Tares
Cepas Viejas 2011
100% Mencía
Bierzo (León) Spain

First night in Alicante and while wandering around found El Portal Taberna. Luckily we were able to sit at the bar, and (wish I could remember the sommelier’s name) we were guided through fabulous food, wine, cocktails, and conversation. This is why I love Spain so much, everyone has always been so kind, friendly, and more than happy to share with you what they love about their city. Anyway, one of the glasses I thoroughly enjoyed was Dominio de Tares’ “Cepas Viejas”. Within the label design is braille that also reads Cepas Viejas which translates to old vines. Hoping to one day in the future to again sit at this bar, relax, and imbibe. Miss you Spain!

Lovely gold color. Nose is light citrus maybe faint orange or tangerine, slate, salt and white pepper. Swig and it’s tart, tangy, a little pepper, citrus (lemon and tangerine), and a small bit of pear. It’s a crisp and clean quencher. Biodynamic and wild yeasts, but not one ounce of funk. Honestly, I cannot remember if I got this wine here, or brought it back from Spain, so going to give credit to all where I may have picked this up.

Les Gunyoles D’Avinyonet
Catalunya Spain
Xarel.lo 50%, Macabeo 50%

Biodynamic

Color is a glistening pale golden. Breathe in a bit of a sea breeze of salt, some tangerine, grapefruit and something herbal like rosemary. Now I’m craving jamón. Time for the glou-glou and there’s apples, pears, some tart lemon, clean slate and a lot of love. What I wouldn’t give for some grilled sardines, a dozen oysters, and some squishy cheese. Take me to the plaça, let me feel the sun on my face, get a little pink (maybe from the sun or maybe from the wine), and break out the cribbage board. Let’s take the afternoon off!

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Brings out lemon and a tart zing

Again, I miss you Spain, and of course La Vinya del Senyor. Am so happy that I took a chance with this lovely white wine, and hope one day to sit at the bar again and clink glasses with my S.O. In the past, it was often so easy to take these little moments for granted. If you’re with your family or friends, hug them and appreciate that they are there.

A Natural Stomp

Mission
Tinto Uno 2016
Ribeira Sacra
Lugo, Spain
Mencía 85%, Garnacha Tintorera 10%, Godello 5%

A beautiful glass of heavy purple. Here goes the first breath…mineral and cherry. Let it do it’s thing for a bit and then chocolate, green pepper, and pretty spring flowers. Now on with the show, this one is a smooth operator from the very first sip. Cherry, strawberries, blueberries, and then here pops in olive pit, salt with a bit of earthiness and maybe, just maybe, burnt sage. No, I’m not going all hippie and cleansing the place, even though after WFH for at least 9 weeks, this place could probably use it. This is a juicy friendly wine that makes my brain cry out, “Why can’t I be at a bar or at least with friends sharing this wine! This is a velvety wine that needs to have people together and cheering it!” Also check out the Tech Notes from Mission‘s website. I love the idea of the grapes being stomped underfoot.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: mellows it all out and heightens the cheese in the Cheez-Its. Makes me want to keep drinking more, which I did way too fast. Oof.

Italy and Spain Had a Baby

Pietro Beconcini
Ixe Tempranillo 2016
Toscana IGT

Beautiful ruby color. Take a breath. Cherry, warm spice that envelops you, plum, mineral/slate and a hint of leather. Time for sipping. Again there’s the cherry, plummy goodness. It’s tart and cola with peppercorns and yes my favorite granite. Opens up so smooth. Day two, it’s a juicy sweet (not like a sugar bomb but delicious sweet ) fruit friendly

Pietro Beconcini is the only Tempranillo wine grower in Italy. He found some old vines on his land and with a bit of investigation, discovered they may have been dropped off by ancient travelers. Maybe they were on a pilgrimage or on a trade route. Either way, I’m sure glad they did! It’s like Italy and Spain had a baby. Each sip makes me want to be sitting outside in a bar in Spain, but then also reminds me of long ago when I was studying in Cortona, Italy. Man, how my drinking days have changed. Back in the early 90s in Cortona, between classes we would grab a bite and as students do, grab a cheap beer, known as Splügen. Ah for the simpler days.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: It makes the wine have a darker feel. It’s delicious yet I can feel the good funk. Oh this is so good in bed with the cats snuggled near.
