Organic, sustainable, vegan
Sourced from: Lost Slough Vineyard, Clarksburg, Yolo County, CA
Winemakers & Farmers: Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson
Delightfully dancing pale yellow green. Sniffing musky melon, lime, tangelo, kumquat, nectarine, and salty rock. Ooh that was lovely! Sipping lime and lemon, just a super tiny bit of fresh honeycomb, light white donut peaches, and surprise! a hint of coconut, and a lick of a river rock. Everything just smoothly balances and begs for shrimp tacos and some spicy guacamole.
Pairs with Cheez-It’s: doesn’t do a lot, so I vote no.
Steve & Jill Matthiasson didn’t inherit a vineyard or any of the often told tales, but they both had a love and destiny in sustainable farming in common, oh and also UC Davis. From what I’m reading, Steve’s journey got a kickstart as a kid in Canada being sent to his cousin’s, who had a wheat farm; and later in Arizona going to a school where the kids mingled with farm animals and had their hands in gardening. Who wouldn’t grow up in love with nature and respect for the critters that inhabit it with an education like that? So now with their vineyards and also ones they source from (such as grapes for their Tendu wines), everything is all about organic, sustainability, reducing carbon footprint, and considering their feathered and furred neighbors; yet it goes further than that…they consider everything they do, grow, etc. and their impact on the environment not only just locally but globally. If only everyone could think forward like them, maybe we could start digging our way out of our climate change mess.

Jail jumpsuit orange. Raising the glass and there’s orange, tangerine, and oooh barnyard. Waiting for the yard to bail out (not as much on day two).Ok it’s starting to fade and orange blossoms are added, but the hint of dark is still there (on day one), followed by salt and smoke. Sipping orange and orange blossoms, lemon, salt, and a lick of granite. There’s still some earthy darkness, but on day two it’s pretty much gone. Replaced with super light honey. Let it breathe more and it is refreshing, tangy and definitely fun. A fashionable glass of sunshine that would really go well with anything with cloves
Pairs with Cheez-It’s: more light and smooth. I kind of prefer it before the pairing.
This isn’t just an orange wine, it’s a wine that beer lovers would seriously enjoy. Kind of makes sense because on their website it says they partner with Stüvenagh brewery (and their logo/name is on this wine label). Also learning that Stüvenagh comes from the Celtic word for Stefanago. Another fun fact it the brewery is just as organic as the winery. If you want to get a good look as to how magical their lands and castle are, please check out this video. A little more than a minute of your time will take you on a vacation that we are all longing.

Cascina degli Ulivi
Bellotti Bianco, 2019
Biodynamic and organic
A glass of spun gold…breath in and embrace the orange, lemons, and maybe a touch of rosemary. Sip and there’s apples, peaches, lemon, some tangerine tart tingle, and a bit of mineral. It’s a fun friendly wine that asks you to take it out on a boat and bask in the sun.
Pairs with Cheez-Its: brings out the lemon and adds some smoke. Very smooth.
Side note: This weekend, I’ll have to revisit Jonathan Nossiter’s Natural Resistance to reflect back on Stefano Belloti’s life and how while he was here on this earth, broke the rules and championed the natural ways. Louis Dressner Selections has a lovely post honoring him and an interview with Belloti from 2011.
