Be Like Jean

Domaine Rimbert

Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Rolle
Organic, indigenous yeasts, vegan friendly
Berlou, Saint Chinian, France
Owner & winemaker: Jean-Marie Rimbert

Bright orange amber pour. Right out the gate and straight to your nose, this is definitely Vin Orange. There’s an orchard blossom blend (very much so on the orange blossoms), oranges, tangelo, zesty citrus cocktail, a whiff of smoke, along with apples and a green herby sniff like basil. Sipping a blend of that citrus cocktail (combined with lime zest) , again apple (a little cider too) & a little pear thrown in with a mix of dried fruits (apricots, white raisins, a shave pineapple), moments of mild white pepper, dried basil, fresh green bell pepper, and an exhale of blossoms. Don’t over think this easy drinker….just enjoy the vibe.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: deliciously smooth

Jean-Marie Rimbert (along with his wines) is the breath of fresh air the world so needs right now. I love the down to earth statements he makes, by calling himself a “paysan” or in other words, a peasant…a humble farmer who finds joy in the simple natural things in life and his surroundings. As he importantly said,  “I want to cultivate in a way that doesn’t damage the environment. I’m in it for the long term.” He’s also working on spreading his organic wisdom to his neighbors/local growers from who he at times buys their grapes, to create “easy-going wines”. Hey, since they’re already sustainable, why not go all in like Jean. ❤️

Plummy ruby with a wash of blue. Breathing in strawberries, raspberries, a little gentle creaminess, cherries, plums, a twist of black & white pepper, and a good fern touch. Tasting and this is as delicious as I anticipated…red & green strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, plums, a smidge of skittles, lemon bright squeeze, and a peppery dash that reminds me of the wild pepperweed. Perfect chilled drinking to kick back or kick up your heels.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: juicier mmmm

When I first saw the name, Montón de Piñas, I wondered what on earth is this about a mountain of pineapples? Is it named after a trek Ruben & Elisa might have had to Pineapple Mountain (Por Lo Shan) in Hong Kong? Does SpongeBob live here while on vacation? Nope, if I had just looked on their site first, I would’ve seen it is one of the 2 small areas (other is El Canalizo) that make up their vineyards that are “near the Virgen de El Henar Sanctuary, and surrounded by pine trees”, so it’s more of a mountain of pine cones. I always have to make things so difficult for myself 🤪. Anyway, this is another one of their smashing good bottles, and as I’ve said before I’m a Malaparte fangirl. They’ve never steered me wrong!

Keep That Vinyl Spinning

Hazy orange gold and as I head into glass 2 it turns even deeper. First scent and the word decadent popped in my head. Hmmm…deep fresh squeezed oranges, tangerines, kumquats, tangelos, and all their blossoms, along with warm summer ripe peaches & apricot with a touch of musk. Sipping those perfectly ripe peaches and all the previously mentioned citrus that expands, and add a sliver of pineapple The orange goes all Valencia (which makes me smile and dream of a plane ticket) also a good bit of their zest to even it all out. There’s also a creamy feel that’s evened with a tart pop & a shake of salt. Oh “New Wave Girl”, drop the needle on that vinyl and keep things spinning!

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: sweet and lovely

Malaparte fangirl here! Each one I’ve tried has been a natural celebration of their land and well…them too. What a talented family! They do have a project I haven’t tried yet and hope I’ll be able to track one down, “Uvas Nomadas”. Sourced through crowd funding, Ruben & Elisa find an old or “just right” small vineyard/plot that could use their love & care. They and the land owner strike a deal for a year, Malaparte works their magic, and in the end the participants reap their rewards in wine. Pretty darn good investment in my book!

Perfume of Adventure

Vinos Malaparte
Pico Lunar Amphora
Tempranillo
Natural farming, no pesticides or herbicides, indigenous yeasts & spontaneous fermentation, aged 8 months in amphorae
Cuéllar, Segovia, Spain
Winemaking family: Mariano de Frutos, Elisa de Frutos, Ruben Salamanca

Deep purple tapestry with a ruby rim. Holding the glass up and a puff of buttery caramel that floats out and then morphs into cherries, biscotti, raisins, cola, forest fronds, and a little of the green fairy. Alcohol alert…you have been warned because it will go into hiding as a spicy dried fruit but this is 14.1%, yet it’s soooo smooth. First splash on my tongue and there’s plums, cherry and dried cherries jammy, raisins, hay (that fades), sage/thyme bouquet garni, smoke, and after a bit more breathing time it is so smooth once again. BTW this wine will make you tipsy before you know it, so beware of wine goggles. You might fall in love with more than this wine, and sometimes…well you know, it can spell trouble, oh and don’t go shopping online while drinking…you might end up with a pair of 1976 roller skates…trust me.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: FAB! Love them

My 1st Malaparte wine was their Dindi Blanco which I loved and this one brings on that same feeling but is such a different deep lush creature. The taste and smell of their natural land and all that grows and nourishes their vines just shine in their wines. I love this quote from their site, “When you walk through the vineyard, in a second, you bring clothes caught on forever perfume of adventure. The scent of thyme, lavender, rosemary, odor open field, later, hunting and feathers. And how many of those scents we are in the wine after a spring and summer of coexistence with pines, lavenders, sage, thyme, rock roses and evergreens.” Ah, it’s a celebration of Tempranillo and their part of Segovia in a beautiful bottle.
