Hate to start this way but I cracked the cap and it flew out of the bottle and lost probably a 1/4 of it. I swear I stored it properly. Anyway, here we go…fizzy magenta with a white rim of bubbles. Immediately scents pop of hay, funk, a cocktail of raspberries, strawberries, cherries, cranberry; and as it grows a deeper funk that lingers still but continues to fade but never leaves entirely. Brett is that you or one of your buddies? If so…yo get out of here! Sipping and and the flavor is so much better and filled with raspberries, cranberries, a lemon/lime pop, and of all things a little Hawaiian Punch Fruit Juicy Red with a spritz of seltzer. There’s still a smidge of hay that fades into a little greenery, so very fresh and backyard drinking ready.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: nice and kicks all the funk out

I’ve had my fare share of fab Fossil & Fawn wines, but that’s not the reason I picked this one up. Just look at that hot dog! I’m probably one of the only people (out of my NY friends) that still craves them. For those of you that don’t know, during the lockdown many bars were only able to stay open and serve drinks if they sold something to eat. Let’s just say I lost count on how many I ate! BTW you can even get a giclée print of this mouthwatering art work signed by the artist Brian Crabaugh, but you need to act fast because it’s an edition of 🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭.

Pale yellow-green like the crayon but lighter. The closer it gets to my nose, out comes magnolias, peaches, pear, apple, a lemon/lime mix, and a cooling freshness of our old springhouse. Lovely bright blend dancing on my tongue. Pears, apples and peaches mingling with honey and honeycomb, peat, and tang of a lemon sliver on the side.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: brings out even more honey

Teutonic came about by Barnaby falling in love with how diverse German rieslings can be and later a friend saying they could plant grape vines on her farm. Oh, and Olga telling him which credit card was ok to use to buy the vines. Now they still grow their own but also source from other vineyards (Willamette Valley) but only ones that are dry farmed and preferably vines that are 20 years or older. It’s a passion and a lot of hard work, and their wines really shine. Jazz Odyssey is a bottle of fun happy dancing joy, like Old Fish Jazz Band’s toe tapping live performance of “Doctor Jazz”. Hazy orange and deep golden streaked sunset, almost copper. Breathing in a delightful citrus blend of lemon, orange, tangerine, with a smidge of clove, coconut, a little fresh cut grass, and some wet granite. There’s a bit if Vanilla that plays hide and seek, and very light oak as it breathes…poof gone. Sipping and here comes orange, pineapple, shake that salt, and tangy tart sparks. Then all of a sudden there’s a touch of Kirby cucumbers,  and some white pepper. I know it’s neutral oak, but there’s a little vanilla of it hanging out in the background with a smoky ember. It’s like a fresh fun playground in my mouth.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: makes it even more smooth and even a little creamy

This is my third Flat Brim wine, and each has been so unique and all delicious. I guess it’s due to them being an urban winery and able to source the best grapes from growers they trust and know are sustainable (some are also organic and others biodynamic). Having such a beautiful diverse painter’s palette to work with has to be an amazing opportunity, and this bottle is a great expression of their creativity. One more thing to add, “Not Basic 2020” is a wine that can win over your beer loving friend that consistently says NO to wine. Give ‘em a little nudge and once they try, they’ll be sold.

A glass of red/orange streaked sunrise. At first I thought buttery and that of all things turns into toffee then chewies (I’ve mentioned before). They’re not blondies, they’re brown sugar goodness that look like light beige brownies. After that there’s cherry/strawberry reduction, scratch of that orange peel, and yeah, smoky Twizzlers. Sipping and these babies have been smoked but in a good way…cherries, raspberries, strawberries, and Lady apples. There’s a creaminess, a little cloves, and a nice last ember.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: I don’t even know how to put it other than everything becomes more. More smoke and sweeter, bolder fruit

You’re experiencing what happened on the west coast. The fires engulfed and destroyed lands, houses, and vineyards. Smoke drifted and traveled and touched many grapes, and out of tragedy came a blossom of hope. Yes, it was smoked but it grew, developed and was nurtured (and boy was this really thought out work) into this bottle. Ian and Becky Atkins took a great chance with these grapes, but as the old adage goes, “ when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Ok, so this is far better than lemonade. Last night after the first glass, I put in an order for a 2nd bottle, and that should say something. Honestly, I would love a case! Hopefully though, the west coast will not see the destruction and devastation again.

Gave this one a slight chill. Poured a glass and it’s cloudy, ruby and intriguing.

Breathe in and there’s heady floral perhaps orange blossoms, tart cherry, salt and slate. Sip and there’s cherry cola, orange peel, and smoke. Are we heading toward a cocktail feel? Keeping on swishing, and there raspberries, and a tangy tingle. Oh this is fun, and for some reason a certain Blue Nile song has become an earwig for me. Miss that band and love the album.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Smoothes any tart out into velvet. No rough edges. Just smooth love like Paul Buchanan’s voice.
