Preserving The Lands

Wither Hills
Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Certified Sustainable
Marlborough, New Zealand
Head winemaker: Matt Large
Winemakers: Andrew Petrie, Patricia Miranda-Taylor

Starlight shimmering light yellow-green. There’s scents of orange & other blossoms, wisteria, lemon, lime, grapefruit, guava, and a mineral salty breeze. Sipping away…lemon, lime, grapefruit, squeeze of tangerine & all the citrus zest, passion fruit, sliver of mango, green apples, super ripe home  grown cucumber, touch of bell pepper, cool mineral river rock lick, shake of salt, and a really teeny pinch of white pepper as it grows & then fades. Oh this glass has me craving a seafood tower like the one we had in Zeebrugge with langostinos, winkles & all.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: it’s complicated

Back in 2000, Wither Hills purchased their Rarangi Vineyard which had previously had not been given the proper care needed, and the wetlands (one of the largest in the region) in the middle of the site had been damaged due to areas being drained for farming & cattle, the water being compromised and invasive weeds popping up. Once it was in the winery’s hands they set off to fix the past wrongs. The cows were shown the door, pests were removed by trapping, native flora were replanted, they implemented careful protection of rare & threatened plants (like the Mazus novaezeelandiae) that were still sticking it out. Now the Rarangi Wetlands Conservation Project has an annual indigenous greenery planting day for members to celebrate that they’re continuing to keep it all sustainable. Now that is commendable and cool.

Following The Rainbow

Altschwager Kenneally
Tapi
Sauvignon Blanc 2022
Wairau Valley Vineyard
Certified organic, sustainable
Marlborough, NZ
Gus & Swan Altschwager and Mark & Emma Kenneally

Really pale straw starlight with green hints. There’s scents of grapefruit, passionfruit, gooseberry, a little mango & pineapple frozen cocktail, smidge of fresh cut grass & green bell pepper that grows into something with a little more warm pepper. All of the scents including the pepper part are there in the taste but more luscious and vibrant yet a dryness in the back. There’s also in a little yellow watermelon and a zip of lemon/citrus spark…this is easy and so friendly…how about pass me some prosciutto.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: oh this is delicious and brings out pears and more pineapple…tropical afternoon delight

Altschwager Kenneally is made up of 2 countries (Australia & New Zealand), 3 wine regions, 4 friends, and a desire to create the best small batch sustainable wines. This two family wine team of Gus & Swan and Mark & Emma really care about the land/environment, their imprint, what gets left behind & what may be produced from it…”because in order for us all to live well, we must respect the land” and this very honorable passion is also what originally brought them together…well that and also good wine that can tell you the tale of its roots. The bottle I lucked into is from their New Zealand line, “Tapi”, named after the stately Mount Tapuae-o-Uenuku and translates from Māori to “footprint of the rainbow”. If this is what the start of the rainbow tastes like, then bring on the rest because I’m ready to keep climbing and following where it leads.

Grape Obsessions

Otto’s Constant Dream
Sauvignon Blanc 2021
Sustainable farming
Marlborough, New Zealand
Produced by: Hunter’s Estate
Winemakers: Peter and James MacDonald

Light pale yellow with a little green flicker. Scents of pineapple, grapefruit, tangelo, apples, a smidge of pine needle, and slate. Sipping and ok, I was not expecting to love this as much as I do. It is really fabulous! So fresh and bright and sweet and tart all at once. It’s a good smash of a cocktail of pineapples, apples, pears, a spritz of citrus blend and again a pine needle just hanging on the side of the glass, and a touch of that slate again. This is the perfect surprise of joy I needed!

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: I was thinking really do I have to? But guess what it doesn’t ruin any of that joy and is a perfect snack

This is one motivating wine since it sparked a business. From what I’m reading this is “the wine that launched Communal Brands. Inspired by Melissa Saunders’ obsessive nature about wine, her friend and future business partner, Chris Antista, created a wine in her honor: OCD. She applied said obsessive nature to find the right juice for this eponymous brand, ultimately finding a warm connection in her husband’s native New Zealand.” Their decisions on who to work with is very cool too…they need to be responsible, sustainable, no chemicals, but the one that really says it all is they only work with vineyards where they’d feel good about their kids playing. Good enough for me!
