Birds Of Different Feathers

Kontozisis Organic Vineyards
Innocent Dove 2019
PGI Karditsa
Xinomavro 50%, Merlot 50%
Certified organic, hand harvested, unfined & unfiltered
Karditsa, Thessaly, Greece
Andreas Kontozisis & Aphrodite Tousia

Shining garnet glass.Let this baby breathe! After that time out, smelling raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, tomato leaves & vines stewing on a sunny day, plums, cherries, and lavender mixed with mild rosemary. All of the scents are there on the taste but a bit more rustic. There’s also lilacs, irises, & lavender, and finally a little white pepper with even a smidge of bell.

Pairs with Cheez-Its: NO STEP AWAY FROM THE BAG

Kontozisis Organic Vineyards has been certified organic in the vineyards & cellar since 1991 (one of the earliest ones in Greece) which truly shows Andreas & Aphrodite’s passion and dedication for their land, vines and wines. Their Innocent Dove “draws from the Greek folk phrase for ultimate innocence” which is perfect for their honest, natural way of winemaking. This winged wonder from Karditsa led me to another one that is definitely a bird of a different feather. Karditsa’s Pafsilipo Park has wandering peacocks, and everywhere I read it mentions relaxing in the grounds with them. They are such graceful and beautifully adorned creatures, but relaxing? If you’ve never heard their call here’s a video by @NatureWalk1 (not from Pafsilipo). Now I’ll let you be the judge. Still would love to visit them but think I’ll pass on hanging out and reading a book in the park. Would much rather chill out with another glass of this quietly cooing “Dove”. 🍷

Always Read The Fine Print

Oenogenesis
Mataroa Red 2020
100% Cabernet Sauvignon
PGI Drama
Sustainable
Macedonia, Greece
Winemaker: Bakis Tsalkos

Dark ruby/plummy glass. Breathing in a creaminess at first pour, next up are cherries & plums fresh & dried chewiness, a bag of mixed blueberries, raspberries, strawberries & a mini reduction of them all along with an herb bundle including rosemary, thyme and a few more. Sipping and it’s bright and light. There’s that bit of cream again that lightens over time, all of the above cherries, plums & berries bouncing around on my tongue along with boysenberry, a smidge of orange zest & a teeny lemon spark, and after having a time out there’s a little clove/pepper bit on the back. Just joyously light and lively.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: weirdly very delicious

I had already finished a playful post about this red being a perfect seasonal transition, and then I read the tiny print on the label…this bottle represents so much more. Will fully admit to not knowing much on the history of Greece’s civil war in the 40s, and I had never heard of the RMS Mataroa that gave an escape route (Dec. 1945) for around 150 intellectuals, artists, scientists, philosophers, writers, and other creatives from the unrest & persecution. They were gifted a chance of a new life in Paris and to also spread their knowledge, research & artistic passion through Europe that continues today. Check out Mataroa La Mémoire trouée “the precious cargo” for a snapshot into their past.

Powers Of The Sun, Moon & Stars

Domaine Apostolidi
Assyrtiko Agia Triada 2021
100% Assyrtiko
PGI Kavala
Biodynamic & organic certified, indigenous yeasts
Kavala, Greece
Efthymios and Vasiliki Apostolidi (brother & sister)

Light twinkling golden starlight. Breathing in a gentle lemon/lime/citrus blend along with a smidge of peeled tart apple, and wet cool granite. Taking a sip and there’s lemon & old school Lemonhead candy, zingy lime, a honeysuckle drop & fresh clean honey (no comb), crabapples, good shake of salt with a lick of conglomerate rock, a smidge of ginger, and on the exhale a friendly herbal blend of thyme, oregano, basil & more.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: more rich and very delicious

Each generation of Apostolidi have worked to move their winery forward. Their starting point was back in 1958, when the first vines & vineyard took root and by 1981, the 2nd generation (Ioannis) began their expansion. 3 hectares (2003) then grew to 10 and a new winery (2007) filled with ambition. Now the 3rd generation (Efthymios & Vasiliki) are up to 13 ha and a new outlook where fresh ideas mingle with the past. After their wine studies in Germany, both returned to add their own push further forward with going certified biodynamic & organic (which has had a delicious outcome). Their words sum it up best, “We consider a vineyard to be a living organism. Behind it is a complex ecosystem, in which the microcosm is related to the macrocosm. By taking into account the rhythms and cycles of nature, that is, cosmic influences such as those of the sun, moon or stars, we use their powers, for us. In this way we work with and not against nature and work for a successful agriculture. In the 21st century, we humans have forgotten how to understand and use the knowledge our ancestors taught us from thousands of years of observation to accomplish our work.” ☀️🌙✨

A Glass of Stars

Papras Bio Winery
Pleiades 2019 (Orange Wine)
Roditis 100%
PGI Tyrnavos Greece
Biodynamic  and wild yeasts

A glass of orangey gold that is sparkling like the stars they’re named after. Breathe in orange peel, grapefruit, salt, orange blossoms, and floral. As it spends time opening white pepper smokiness appears. I’m feeling something of a beer here. Let’s give this a sip…orange, tangerine, grapefruit, and pineapple. Wow that’s a lot of fruit, yet dry. There’s also lovely smoke, spice, salt and oh so tart. Let it hang out for a while and you can taste orange blossoms and there’s that white pepper again. A beautiful spot-on orange wine. Also if you like Gose beer like I do, you’ll love this wine.

Pairs with Cheez-It’s: Mellows out the tart yet it’s still lurking somewhat there.
